Charles N. Castagna -
Mediator
A native of Clearwater, Florida, Charles
Castagna began his legal career in 1980 as a law clerk to Florida
Supreme Court Judge James C. Adkins, Jr. (1980 - 1982) He
graduated from the George Washington University in 1977 with a
degree in Public Affairs, and received his J.D. degree from the
Florida State University College of Law in 1980.
After a brief stint in Washington, D.C. as a
lawyer with the Carr, Jordan, Coyne & Savits insurance defense
firm (1982 - 1983), he associated with the lobbying firm of
Alcalde, Henderson & O 'Bannon (1983 - 1985) before
returning to the Tampa Bay area in 1985. From 1985 - 1987 he was
associated with Battaglia, Ross, Hastings & Dicus in St.
Petersburg, FL, and then with McMullen, Everett, Logan, Marquardt
& Cline in Clearwater from 1987 - 1990, after which he formed
Charles N. Castagna, P.A. in 1990. Practice areas generally
included criminal law, personal injury (plaintiff and defense),
real estate, family law, condominium law, commercial law, banking
and commercial landlord and tenant.
Mr. Castagna began mediating in 1988 as a
volunteer with the 6th Circuit Citizen Dispute Settlement program.
He was certified as a circuit-civil and county mediator in 1990,
and as a family and federal mediator in 1992. He has now mediated
thousands of matters in state and federal court, as well as
pre-suit matters including civil rights, commercial, condominium,
construction, contract, corporate, employment and non-compete,
family law (all issues), franchise disputes, hurricane claims,
insurance coverage and bad faith, partnership disputes and
dissolutions, personal injury and wrongful death, prem ises and
product liability, probate, professional liability (accounting,
dental, legal and medical), real estate and securities.
Charles served as a member of the former Florida Supreme Court
Standing Committee on Mediation and Arbitration Rules from 1993 -
2001, as President of the Florida Association of Professional
Family Mediators (2000 - 2002), and as President of the Florida
Academy of Professional Mediators (2002 - 2005), in which he
maintains Diplomate status. He has served as an adjunct professor
of Alternative Dispute Resolution at the Stetson University
College of Law, and frequently presents to state and local bar
associations on the topic of ADR. He also maintains an active
training schedule and has taught dozens of Continuing Mediator
Education courses focusing on ethics in mediation.
Mr. Castagna has been selected as a Leading Florida Attorney (ADR)
and named a recipient of the 13th Judicial Circuit Mediation and
Diversion Services Outstanding Family Mediator Award. He has also
been selected for inclusion in Who's Who in American Law (ADR).
